Who Is This Guy and Why Should I Listen To Him?
You’re right to be skeptical, as the chances are, you won’t know me from Adam.
Well, let me fill you in.

Now, let me assure you, you’re not listening to someone who’s never walked in your shoes.
Actually, quite the opposite. My parents opened our family farm guest house when I was just 7 years old.

Of course, I wasn’t put to work at 7, like I was the main character in a Charles Dickens novel. Otherwise social services would have taken me away for sure.
However, for the next 2 and half decades I worked EVERY conceivable part of the business.
I’ve been the cleaner, chef, gardener, front of the house, back of the house, you name it, I’ve done my time in the trenches.

And I loved it (ha, well most of it...)
Yet, even with all my years of onsite experience I felt there was still something missing.
And to discover what it was, I had to fly the nest.
So, after leaving the family business in my 20’s found myself in London working for some of the most well known review companies in the world including Qype, MoveMe and Yelp.
While there, not only did I have the inside track to how these review sites really operate, I also realised how critical online marketing had become in the success of any business, especially in a saturated industry like hospitality.
So, I had my mission.
To absorb everything I could about marketing a hospitality business so when I returned home I could apply it to my own family's property, The Grainary.
And I did just that....
With exceptional results.
And then the lightbulb moment.
It became crystal clear to me, 95% of hospitality owners didn’t have a clue how to market their properties.
Not even being aware of the simplest tweaks which could make their business flourish.
The industry was crying out for this.
My mind was made up.
Boostly was born and I’ve never looked back.

Now, it may sound like bragging, but I promise you, it’s not.
I only tell you all this because I've know exactly where you are now, and know what it takes to run a hospitality business.

It’s tough and anyone who hasn’t done it themselves just wouldn’t understand.
But that's enough about me. Let me tell you about Claire.
Who, like yourself, maybe came across to hospitality later in life.
As it was not her first career.
She spent the first half of her work life in a job a world away from owning her own hospitality business.
Working for a global company down in London where she’d climbed the ladder to a pretty high paying career.
But in the last few years, the money wasn’t enough compensation for the stress and the long, miserable commutes to work. And the city life she once adored, had lost its shine.
Claire now had a young family. And the idea of raising them in an ever more crowded, polluted and dangerous city filled her with crippling anxiety.
However, she had a plan.
As a little girl, she spent many summers on the Devon coast and always loved her time there.
I suppose you could say, deep down she’d always had a dream to go back to Devon and settle down.
And as her youngest was coming up to school age it seemed like the best time to move.
This became a reality when 3 years ago in 2015, when instead of the usual holiday in the south of Spain, she went back to Devon with her own family.
They had an unbelievable week and the kids adored it.
Afternoons were spent riding bikes, paddling on the beach and just enjoying the beautiful countryside.
While the cool summer evenings were enjoyed with her husband Phil, with a gin and tonic in hand at one of the local country pubs.
It was absolute bliss.
This was the life she now wanted. Free from the stresses of city life and having the countryside on her doorstep to enjoy with her family whenever they pleased.
At the end of the trip, her mind was made up and with Phil’s support they decided to give it a go and pulled the trigger.
Now, to fulfill their dream it made perfect sense that opening a B&B or guesthouse was the best option.
That way they’d still have a steady income coming in, and as it was their own business they could take as much time off as they wanted.
She vividly remembers telling Phil one evening.
Sure, she expected the first year to be tough, doing most of the work while they were finding their feet.
But as they were both hardworking and weren't shy of getting their hands dirty and mucking in it wouldn’t be a problem.
And once they were booked up she would have the extra staff so herself and Phil could step away and reap the rewards of being their own boss.
But as with most hospitality businesses, it didn't happen like that…
And the reality was very different
The first year was fine.
Plenty of her friends and family had come and stayed and numbers were good.
Of course, they could have been better, although they were sure to improve with more experience...Right?
For their loved ones the novelty soon wore off and they wanted to go to other places. She understood and knew she couldn't expect them to stay with her just out of loyalty so she kept quiet.
Once Those Bookings Dried Up, The Situation Turned Bleak, Very Fast.
Claire and Phil had no idea what they had let themselves in for and to say it was a shock to the system was an understatement.
Because of the poor numbers, the few staff they had taken on had to be let go, which meant they had to pick up the slack.
Simply, there just wasn't enough bookings and the ones they got were through the commision grabbing OTAs and 3rd parties websites.
It was a love and hate relationship.
As even though every booking was a blessing, it also hurt when she counted up the commission she was paying every month.
As you know, 15% +on every room mounts up fast.
She felt like she was working for them and not the other way round.
Which was crazy as this was her family's business and were taking their profits for doing next to nothing.
It was a hard pill to swallow.
Never in a million years did she expect it to be this hard.
Claire’s vision of spending more time with her family had gone from a possible reality, to a absolute fantasy.
Eventually, Phil had to do freelance consultancy work as an extra income to help loosen the ever tighter financial noose around their necks.
This meant he was away a few days a month, so on those days she was even more exhausted.
So, even though she was quiet, because of the lack of help she was working 6-7 days a week, with most days feeling like she was just treading water and still no light at the end of the tunnel in sight.
Her night would usually finish about 8pm where she’d collapse on the sofa and hopefully catch a hour with Phil and maybe an episode or 2 on Netflix to decompress.
She knew she had to market the business, but where to start. There was information out there but none it related to specifically to hospitality.
She wasn’t a marketer. In her old job she had a whole department who used to look after that.
Sure, she could come up with ideas but the tech side was lost on her.
And when she wasn’t doing that she was obsessively scouring review sites spying on other properties in her area and racking her brains how they had become so popular.
This just made her even more depressed as every year more and more competition was appearing so standing out was becoming harder and harder.
And as time went on the financial situation was getting even more desperate. The nest egg they’d built up with years of hard work was disappearing fast.
She’d come too far to cut her losses now. This had to be a success. Not just financially but she’d never given up on anything in her life and this wasn’t going to be the first.
Something had to break.
It was during one of her usually fruitless internet sessions trying to get some actually usable advice to help with bookings, she came across a free blog post I written about ‘How to Make Booking. com work for you’.
She told me it struck a cord because it was direct, easy to understand and to the point.
And the best thing...It was specifically aimed at hospitality owners.
So, she spent the next hour going through blog post after blog post absorbing all the actionable advice she could.
The very next day she sent me an email and in a few hours we were chatting on the phone.
Claire didn’t hold back.
She threw all her problems and worries at me, however, within the first 5 minutes I knew I could help, and she was a perfect candidate for Boostly Academy.

However, I’m NOT asking for a silly number of hours a day.

Because the truth is unless a meteorite shower crashes into your local area and wipes out every hotel/airbnb and guesthouse in a 50 mile radius the chances are this isn’t going to happen.
So, what’s their secret?
THEY STAND OUT WITH MARKETING
And in this day and age the best way to do this is online.
And yes, I’m very aware I’m not your accountant so I have no clue of your incomings, outgoings or bottom line.
However, what I do know is 99% of the time, for a business to succeed there needs to be some investment.
The trick is to invest as little as possible for maximum returns and use your hard earned cash for the right solution otherwise you might as well save time you might as well set fire to it.

So, now let’s address the big pink elephant in the room and while we’re at it, be straight with each other.
Where is the money coming from if you don’t have any spare cash at the moment?
Ok, I have 2 ways to look at this problem -
Ask yourself this...
Would you invest in your property when one of your rooms needed redecorating, or new mattress because the springs are shot, or new towels as the ones in room 3 are so worn they’re almost see through?
I’d like to think most us would, as we care about our businesses and these costs could be looked at as a necessity.
Although, these improvements are needed, if no one is walking through the doors to enjoy them it’s dead money.
This Is Why Marketing Your Business Is The Biggest Necessity Of All.
When you market your business correctly, you’ll have more bookings, generating more revenue which in turn will allow you to spend more money on the property. (Or yourself)

Once you have the marketing down pat, your bank balance will more than be able to cope with any of the extras luxuries you want, and then some.
The real question is can you afford not to market your property?
Bring on the last ‘obstacle’.
This is a biggie.
I’d say the majority of my clients hate using the computer.
This is not uncommon. Anyone above the age of 35 didn’t grow up clutching an ipad or had a smart-phone surgically attached to their ear so we’re at a disadvantage from the get go.
Our older generation had to learn, and a lot of us fell through the cracks.
